Reddit product research for ecommerce: a practical workflow
Reddit is useful for product discovery because people describe the moments when an existing product fails. Those conversations can reveal jobs, constraints and workarounds before a trend report catches up. They are signals to investigate, not proof of market size.
Start with a problem-shaped search
Search for a product and a situation: “carry on travel backpack”, “cat water fountain cleaning” or “standing desk cable management”. Product-only searches create noise; problem-shaped searches bring you closer to language real users actually write.
Read across communities
Begin with a cross-community search, then inspect the communities where the same problem appears. Compare hobbyist communities with broader consumer communities. Record the counterexamples too: users who prefer a cheap workaround, reject a feature or say they would not pay to replace the current option.
Turn evidence into a test
For every opportunity, save the permalink, community, date, exact quote, current alternative and unanswered question. Then write a falsifiable hypothesis: who has the problem, in what context, what improvement matters, and what price or landed-cost assumption must be true.
DigNeeds helps organize source-linked Reddit evidence for this workflow. Validate samples with suppliers, a landing page or a product test before buying inventory.
